In the 1960's another group was being formed to rival the Black P-Stone Nation. The Black Gangster Disciple Nation was started by a man named David Barksdale. The Black Gangster Disciple Nation {BGDN} fought bloody wars ont he Chicago south side over turf and drug sales. King David Barksdale was assassinated in 1974. As a symbol of honor and remembrance the six-pointed Jewish star {Star of David} was adopted by the BGDN as well as crossed pitchforks pointing up. Following Barksdale's death, the leadership of the Black Gangster Disciple Nation was taken over by two men; King Larry Hoover and King Jerome 'Shorty' Freeman. They divided the Gangster Nation into the Black Gangster Disciples, led by King Larry Hoover, and the Black Gangsters, led by 'Shorty' Freeman. Both of these men were soon incarcerated but continued to run their groups from inside the penal system.

2. Drugs - No member is to consume or inject any drug that is addictive.
3. Breaking and Entering - No member is to break in anybody's cell, house, locker or any building that is prohibited.
4. Disrespecting - Every member is required to be respectful to any member or non-member of this organization. Being disrespectful entice other to become hostile and disrespectful to you.
5. Stealing - No member is to steal from any member or non-member.
6. Guards - Everybody is required to be respectful to all guards and administration personnel.
7. Gambling - No member is to gamble unless both parties have their money up front.
8. Sportsmanship - All members are required to show sportsmanship when participating in any sports or game activity.
9. Personal Hygiene - All members are to be looking presentable at all times & living quarters.
10. Dues - All members are to pay dues that are required.
11. Aid-n-assist - A member is required to assist their fellow brother in all righteous endeavors.
12. Incidents - All incidents minor or major must be reported.
13. Exercise - All members are required to do their daily exercises.
14. Exploitation - All members are not to use his membership to exploit any funds or favor from any member or non-member.
15. Rape - No member is to threaten or force anybody to engage in any kind of homosexual activities.
16. Arson - All members are required to be familiar with their DOC Handbook.
17. Education - All members are to have some form of diploma or be participating in educational programs.
The Black Gangster Disciple were formed in the late 60's. The leader of the gang called the Black Disciples was David Barksdale. David Barksdale saw the Blackstone Rangers and the Vice Lords growing in size around him and knew that the only way to survive would be to increase his numbers. Barksdale sought an alliance with Larry Hoover and his gang the Supreme Gangsters. Like the Black Disciples the Supreme Gangster did not have the man power to compete with the larger gangs. Even though these two were enemies they agreed to unite. The name was decide on a coin flip. Larry Hoover won the coin flip and gave them the name "Black Gangster Disciples". David Barksdale was anointed leader or King due to the fact the Disciples were the larger of the two combining gangs.
In 1974 the Black Gangster Disciples faced a change. David Barksdale died of kidney failure. At this time the Black Gangster Disciples adopted the Star of David as there symbol in honor of King David Barksdale. Larry Hoover anointed himself King of the Black Gangster Disciples. A power struggle ensued as many original Black Disciples resented the alignment with Larry Hoover. The most prominent rival was Jerome "Shorty" Freeman. "Shorty" Freeman never wanted to align with the Hoover led Supreme Gangsters but was forced to by his loyalty to David Barksdale. With Barksdale gone Freeman no longer felt he had to continue his subordinate role under Hoover. "Shorty" Freeman and other former Black Disciples gang members managed to establish him as a parallel King. This divided the Black Gangster Disciple gang into two factions.
The two factions were the Black Gangster Disciples and the Black Disciples. Larry Hoover remained King of the Black Gangster Disciples and Shorty Freeman became King of a splinter group Black Disciple. Hoover has remained the more powerful of the leaders. Freeman dropped Gangster from the name to show his dislike for Hoover and the Supreme Gangster members. Both Hoover and Freeman continue to run these factions from inside the walls of correctional facilities. King Hoover was committed to the Illinois Department of Corrections on February 1, 1974 serving a sentence of 200 years for murder. Hoover is currently in the Federal Bureau of Prison custody with a life sentence for continuing to run his drug empire from inside the prison walls. King Freeman is currently in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
You may see many different version of the original Black Gangster Disciples. These have taken the from of attempts to unify the divide BGD. Name like BOS (Brotherhood Of the Struggle), New Breed, Gangster Disciple and 3rd World Gangster. Many of these pay homage to the three Kings: King David, King Hoover and King Shorty.
Colors: Black and Blue
Represent: To the right side. Pant leg up, shoe untie, earring in, etc.
Star of David: Honor of King David Barksdale. The six points have meanings - Life, Love, Loyalty and Wisdom, Knowledge and Unity.
2-7-4: Numeric Alphabet - second, seventh and fourth letters meaning BGD or Black Gangster Disciples. Will also see 2-4 for BD or Black Disciples and 7-4 for GD or Gangster Disciples.
Pitchfork: REpresent the struggles of the BGD to overcome oppression.
